Five AI features already on your phone that nobody told you about

You do not need another app. WhatsApp can answer your customers, Google Photos understands Hindi, and Indian students can claim ₹4,000 of Gemini free until December. Checked in August 2026, with the paid traps marked.

Every list of AI tools tells you to sign up for something. A new account, a new password, a free trial that quietly becomes ₹1,600 a month.

This is not that list.

Everything below is already installed on your phone. No signup, no card, no new app. It is sitting in a tab you have never opened.

I checked all five myself in August 2026, including which ones are genuinely free and which ones are not. That second part is the important one — three features everybody writes about are quietly paid, and they are listed at the bottom.

Start here: which of these is for you

You run a shop or a business start at number 1 You are studying or job hunting go to 3 and 4 You just have a phone 2 and 5 are for everyone WhatsApp Business AI answers customers for you, free, in Indian languages Free Gemini year, and Circle to Search worth ₹4,000 — but it expires 31 December 2026 Ask Photos, and your keyboard search your own photos by describing them, in Hindi

1. WhatsApp can answer your customers for you. Free.

This is the biggest one on the page, and almost nobody in India is using it.

In May 2026, Meta switched this on for Indian small businesses inside the WhatsApp Business app. You give it your product catalogue and your business documents. It then answers customer questions on its own — prices, what is in stock, delivery, discounts — books appointments, and collects leads.

A note on the name, because it will confuse you when you go looking. Meta's India announcement calls it Business AI. Meta's own product page and help centre now call it the Meta Business Agent. Same thing, same place in the app.

All day. All night. In every native Indian language.

Why this matters more than any tool on any list

Think about where your business actually happens. It is not on a website. It is not in an app you downloaded last month. It is in WhatsApp, on the same phone you are reading this on, and it has been there for years.

Every "AI for small business" article tells a shop owner to go and learn a new platform. Meanwhile the thing is sitting in a tab inside the app they already have open sixteen hours a day.

How it works

Customer "how much is this?" Business AI reads YOUR catalogue and YOUR documents not the internet It answers — 24/7 price, stock, delivery, booking a slot Or you take over step into any chat, any time

The part that makes this trustworthy: it answers from your catalogue and your documents, not from the internet. It is not guessing your prices. If you did not tell it something, it does not know it.

Where to find it

Open the WhatsApp Business app — the one with the green shopfront icon, not normal WhatsApp. Then:

  1. Tap the Tools tab
  2. Look for Your Business AI or Meta Business Agent
  3. Follow the setup — it asks you questions, you answer them
  4. Upload your catalogue and any documents about your business

Meta's own step-by-step is here.

No coding. No third-party service.

The catch

On the free WhatsApp Business app — the green one most shops use — Meta publishes no charge for the agent and no subscription. That is the version this post is about, and it is the version you are almost certainly on.

It is different on the WhatsApp Business Platform, the API version that larger companies run through a provider. Since 1 August 2026 agent replies there are billed by token consumption, and from 1 October 2026 service messages become chargeable again. If someone is selling you a "WhatsApp AI setup", that is the side they are on, and there is a per-message cost behind it. Meta's pricing page is here.

The rollout is also staged and there are eligibility criteria, so not every business will see the tab yet. If it is not there, you have not done anything wrong — check again in a few weeks.

And test it on yourself before you let it face customers. Message your own business and see what it says. If it gets a price wrong, that is a promise you have to keep.

2. Google Photos can be searched in plain Hindi

You have eleven thousand photos and you find things by scrolling for five minutes with your thumb.

Ask Photos lets you just describe what you want:

  • "the photo of my bike's number plate"
  • "the receipt from the electrician"
  • "what did I eat in Goa"

It is live in India, and it understands Hindi, Marathi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu and Gujarati — so you can ask in the language you actually think in, instead of translating in your head first.

The same feature edits by description too. Rather than hunting for the right slider, you tell it what to change.

Where to find it

Google Photos app, then the Ask tab at the bottom. Type it or say it. Google's help page for it is here.

The catch — read this one

It only works on photos backed up to Google Photos, which means those photos sit on Google's servers, not only on your phone.

For holiday pictures, fine. For photographs of your Aadhaar card, your bank passbook, your signed cheques — think about that properly first. Most people have all three somewhere in their camera roll and have never once considered where they live.

That is not a reason to avoid the feature. It is a reason to know what you are agreeing to.

3. Circle anything on your screen to understand it

Hold the home button, circle anything on the screen with your finger, and get an explanation without leaving the app you are in.

A clause in a rental agreement. A part in a photo of a machine. A maths problem in a PDF. A medicine name on a strip.

This is Circle to Search. Google's own page lists it for Pixel 6 and later, plus other Android phones that support AI Mode — which covers a lot of recent Samsung, OnePlus and Xiaomi devices, but not every Android phone.

Do not go hunting through settings for it. Just hold your home button. If a search bar and a coloured glow appear, you have it. If nothing happens, you do not.

Google Lens also has a Homework mode that shows the steps rather than just the answer — algebra, geometry, calculus. And in August 2026 Google added practice quizzes covering JEE and NEET to Search's AI Mode, free and worldwide.

Why this is underrated

Parents pay real money every month for tutoring apps that do exactly this. A free version is built into the phone already in the child's hand.

The catch

It explains steps well and it still gets things wrong. Confidently.

Treat it as a study aid, not an answer key. A student who copies answers without following the steps will eventually copy a wrong one into an exam.

4. Indian college students: one free year of Google AI Plus

Not a hack. A deadline.

Google is giving eligible Indian college students a free year of Google AI Plus — normally around ₹4,000. It includes higher usage limits on Gemini and 400 GB of storage.

Where: gemini.google.com/students You need: student verification Deadline: 31 December 2026

Google's announcement for India is here, so you can check the terms yourself rather than taking my word for it.

If you are studying, or there is a student in the house, do this one today rather than bookmarking this page. Offers like this end quietly and nobody sends a reminder.

5. Your keyboard can fix your English before you send it

The quiet one on the list, and probably the one that gets used most.

Gboard Writing Tools proofreads and rewrites text inside the keyboard itself, in any app. Change the tone to formal, friendly or concise. Fix grammar and spelling in one tap. It works in WhatsApp, in email, in a form — anywhere you can type.

And it runs on the device. Your message never leaves your phone to be checked. That is a meaningfully better privacy position than any writing app you have to paste your text into.

Why it matters more than it sounds

If you think in Hindi and have to write to a client in English, there is a small tax you pay on every message — the re-reading, the second-guessing, the "does this sound rude?" This removes it, inside the app you were already in.

The catch

It needs Gemini Nano, so it only runs on newer high-end phones — Pixel 9 and 10, and selected Samsung, OnePlus and Xiaomi models. Many people reading this will not have it, and there is no way to add it.

Check your keyboard settings. If it is not there, it is the phone, not you.

Now the part nobody writes: what is NOT free

Three features you will read about everywhere, described as though anyone can use them. You cannot.

Feature What people say What is actually true
The AI formula in Google Sheets "Write one formula, AI runs on every row" Real, and genuinely powerful. But it needs a paid Workspace plan or Google One AI Premium. Not available on a free Gmail account.
Google Meet "Take notes for me" "Free automatic meeting notes" Paid only — Workspace Business Standard and above, or Google AI Pro. Free Gmail does not have it.
Meta AI inside WhatsApp "Unlimited free AI in your chats" Still free, but Meta cut the limits in June 2026 — from 200 to 50 prompts a day for logged-in users, and 25 for logged-out.

I am including this because it is the part that always gets left out, and leaving it out is how people end up on a subscription they did not mean to start.

And one more, which is costing people money right now. In July 2025 Airtel gave its customers a free 12-month Perplexity Pro subscription worth around ₹17,000. Enormous numbers of people in India claimed it. New claims closed in January 2026 — which means the earliest free years began expiring in the middle of 2026, rolling into paid auto-renewal unless the person switched it off.

If you claimed that offer, go and check your renewal setting now. Perplexity's own page on the Airtel promotion is here.

What to do this week

Pick one. Not five.

  • Shop or business: open WhatsApp Business, go to Tools, tap Your Business AI. Even if you do not switch it on, look at what it asks for.
  • Student: claim the Gemini year before 31 December.
  • Everyone else: open Google Photos, go to Ask, and search for something you know you photographed once and could never find again.

That last one takes about eleven seconds, and is usually the moment people realise the phone has been able to do this the whole time.

Check all of this yourself

I would rather you did not take my word for any of it. Every claim above comes from one of these, all official pages from the companies themselves:

WhatsApp / Meta

Google

Perplexity

If one of these pages says something different from what I have written, believe the page and tell me — I will fix it here.

These change, and they will. This page was last checked on 23 August 2026 — when something moves, I update this rather than writing a new post.

One other thing I have built, in case it is ever useful: Blood Lab takes a blood report and explains it in plain English — what the out-of-range values may point to, the likely causes, and a letter you can hand to your doctor.
